What can representations of war on stage, in film and in popular culture tell us about combat? Denis O'Hare, actor and co-writer of An Iliad, Jeanine Basinger, chair of the film studies department at Wesleyan University, and Clive Thompson, contributor to The New York Times Magazine and columnist for Wired discuss whether these representations can change the culture's view of war.

The Bridge over the River Kwai, though not directly related, also leaves viewers with a very negative taste for war.

So sorry I missed An Iliad -- Denis, come back! And so sorry I didn't call in today -- would rather have heard a clip from Waltz with Bashir or The Hurt Locker than Saving Private Ryan (heartily agree with Denis on that front). Thanks, as always, Brian & Co.

As a case in point, a presumably pro-war movie, The Longest Day, coincident with typical adolescent self-doubt, scared me into a realpolitik pacifism.
