In 1954 I was 12 and regularly babysat 3 little boys under age 4 at the rate of 35 cents per hour. The boys' father picked me up and drove me home. Nothing was said about food. I picked up after the children and whatever snacks they had. Occasionally my boyfriend would keep me company for a while; the parents did not object.

FYI - I know this was a long time ago but my first job was babysitting. I watched over two kids (5 and 7) and was paid $7 an hour plus cab fare getting back home. This was 1995. :-)

I was a baby-sitter but quit because of poor working conditions. I took care of 3 children, was paid $13,00 per hour for a woman who was living with her divorced boy friend (Doctor). She was a LCSW with afternoon/night hours. I would pick the children up at school, I volunteered to do homework with the problem child, made dinner, gave the youngest a bath and put her in the night cloths. In the meantime, the boyfriend came home at 6:00 p.m. with this three kids on the day I was there,"but I wasn't responsible for his kids" . One half hour later he would go out with his middle child to a horseback riding lesson and leave the other two home. Now there was a swimming pool in the backyard, but I wasn't supposed to look after the five year old. On the second year after I asked for a raise from $ 10.00 per hour to the $ 13,00, the women didn't give me a Christmas bonus. I would also help the kindergarten child do her little craft/homework tasks and generally was very kind to the children. I took them to the local library, walks, play ball with the two boys in the yard, etc. I felt for those children who were being put on the bottom of the list as she kissed up to the doctors and his kids ( I wonder why). After I left the next year she conceived a child with the doctor and had his child. Now there are 7 semi-related children in that home and A LOT OF FRICTION AMONGST THE CHILDREN.

Thank you for doing this survey! I'm a professional child care provider in Connecticut now, but I spent years as a part-time babysitter in NYC. I found that it was really hard to get anyone to talk about pay, and this leads to misconceptions about what's fair by both babysitters and parents. For me, it was not "spending money" - it was how I paid for college (Barnard). I just want to thank you a million times for bringing this topic out into the open.
