The Toure-Raichel Collective 'Azawad' Live on Soundcheck (Amy Pearl/WNYC)

In a German airport, an Israeli pianist and a Malian guitarist crossed paths, changing both of their musical destinies.

Idan Raichel, the pianist, had already been a huge fan of Vieux Farka Toure, the guitarist, so it did not take him long to suggest playing together. The resulting album is called The Tel Aviv Sessions, and this track is "Azawad."
