Singer-instrumentalist Emily Wells creates an intriguing melodic concoction that feels familiar yet unrecognizable at once.
The classically-trained violinist uses a loop pedal to combine strings and simple hip-hop beats with her ethereal lilts to create a sound that is reminiscent of trip-hop and folktronica sung at a concert hall (with a powerstrip nearby, natch). That’s all to say there’s a bit of street grit, some folk-pop embrace, a whiff of classical and a whole lot of indie DIY/upstart spirit in Emily Wells’s pop. It’s like she hypnotically chants in her new single “Passenger,” which is available for download above, “I’m a passenger, I’m a passenger, gimme the keys I wanna drive.”
Emily Wells celebrates the release of her new album Mama at Bowery Ballroom on Monday night. Before catching her live, watch her sing “Take It Easy, San Francisco,” from her 2009 EP Dirty, below.
