Female Baby Giraffe Born at the Bronx Zoo

Friday, March 23, 2012

The Bronx Zoo has a new female Baringo giraffe calf. When she was born this month, the calf was roughly 6 feet tall and over 100 pounds, according to the Bronx Zoo.

The baby giraffe, which does not yet have a name, could grow up to 16 feet tall and could weigh up to 2,600 pounds.

She will be making her debut in the Bronx Zoo's African Plains in a week.

The Baringo, or Rothchild's, giraffe is native to western Kenya and eastern Uganda. The giraffe population overall, according to the Zoo, is decreasing.

What would you name the new calf? Let us know below.

My son, Stefan and I put a lot of thought into this. We would name the baby "Bonita Bombolina"...because she is of course 'pretty & beautiful,' and that she was born in The Bronx means she HAS to be a Yankees fan. We initially thought of "Bonita Bomber," but Bombolina sounded less aggressive, and when you have "Bonita" next to Bombolina it sort of connotes the melting pot of culture that IS New York City....and she can be called "B.B." for short. Bonita cool is that?

I started with "B.G.," for "Baby Giraffe." Then my mind went to "Bee Gee," then "Bee Gees."

So I'm going to suggest Robin, Barry, or Maurice, and let the zoo pick one of the three.

If i were to name the baby giraffe, I would name her Tu-Tu-Boo! It's a very cute name for a baby giraffe and because of the fact that it is an uncommon name, Tu-Tu-Boo would be recognized all over the world!
