"Marriage" should never have been the business of the state in the first place. Civil marriage should be abolished and replaced by Civil Unions instead. Marriage is a religious ritual performed by, and witnesses by clerics: a contractual oath given to God to remain committed forever. It's not the business of the State. However, for legal reasons, the State should only authorize Civil Unions which would have the protections of civil law to two individuals choosing to legalize their relationship.
