A markup hearing is scheduled today for the House Republicans' transportation bill. Andy Clarke, president of the League of American Bicyclists, Robert Sinclair Jr., manager of media relations at AAA New York, and Sean McNally, vice president of communications and press secretary for the American Trucking Associations, explain how the bill would affect pedestrians, cyclists, drivers, and truckers.

There are answers to a lot of the questions posed above. The segment was very superficial -- just a quick overview of a very few, and not even the most important, of the issues (which is my main gripe).

There are tons of resources out there and there has been tons of work done to answer all these questions but there have been tons of dollars spent by the trucking lobbies (which own the states) to suppress it.

The biker rep is right -- the suppression of citizen involvement in the planning process is a killer.

Try the "Land of the Diesel Bear" article in a 2005 New Yorker issue for a good discussion of how tiny little roads through old residential neighborhoods and main streets or NE state towns (and the Hamptons) have become major truck routes -- just for one of MANY starts.

Brian, do a major segment on this. With better resources!!!

The average speed of a Long Island Railroad commuter train would not place it in the top 15 finishers of the Tour de France bicycle race. If a bike path were placed along the LIRR's level, traffic-light free right of way, I would have a faster way into the city.
No train, no train crew, no non-solar sourced power consumption, and a lighter load on the trail surface.

All drivers should be recertifed, regardless of their age, for their driving skills, knowledge of the rules of the road AND vision.

I think Michael Moore needs an extra axle. ;-)

This is great!!!!! Old, crumbling highways; NAFTA allowing foreign truckers (who may not be able to read our English signs) to drive on our highways; and now additional weight allowance for trucks. Sounds like we just added another ingredient to our transportation recipe for disaster: our highways will become even more dangerous for people travelling in cars. But who cares about people in cars. Trucks are more important b/c they bring us what we want. Big business wins again!!!!

I think the 800 lb gorilla in the room is the poor skill set of passenger car drivers on the road. Every time I travel long distance on the interstates I am shocked by the complete ignorance of car drivers who swerve in front of giant trucks with no idea of the principles of physics and how hard it is for such huge rigs to slow down suddenly or change course. Almost all truck drivers I see are highly trained experts, trying to be safe amongst drivers who only know how to operate the controls of an automatic transmission car. How about re-certifying drivers' licenses? I haven't had to take a test since I was 16 years old. Judging the number of fatalities on America's roads, I think this is an issue that cannot be overlooked.

Even with an extra axle, 8.5 extra tons is going to have a much higher ground pressure on public roads causing roads to prematurely fail. Please ask who is going to pay for added road repair?

There should be speed limit restriction proportional to the weight like it is in Europe. Want to ship 200,000 fine but restrict the speed to 45MPH or LESS.

The discussion about whether larger and or fewer drucks are more or less dangerous is irrelevant unless the crash frequency of various truck sizes is known. Basic math.

Does the independent trucker want this? He has to now maintain 4 extra wheels, a lot more ware and tare on his drive train and power plant and much bigger fuel costs. whatever little more money he gets is going to be eaten up by all these new extra costs. Please ask guest how this helps all the independent operator/owner driver.

Why can't we see the wisdom in diversifying the funding? As a landscape architect, I don't advocate for eliminating funding for better roads, I advocate for creating alternative methods of transportation that give the public options - bikeways, pedestrian ways, safe routes for kids to get to school if they want to walk or ride their bikes. That surely is something a forward looking nation like ours can support.

I notice that while Christie could not find a way to pay for a tunnel that would save millions of people thousands of dollars, they are still working on expanding the turnpike in south jersey. Nj will have to find a way to thank him for making everyone’s commune more hellish.

You already drive with 100,000+ lbs (50 ton+) trucks right now. But they drive with special permits and have have an added axle on the tractor and at least one extra axle on the trailer. And depending on the load size it could be up to five extra axles witch would include a dolly in between the tractor fifth wheel and the trailer king pin (hitch). this makes a huge difference in weight displacement, truck control and hard braking. Just adding an extra axle on the trailer for an added 17,000lbs (8.5 tons) is not really enough.

The Republicans are 100% correct, so all the liberals/environmentalists/progressives stop your whining.

This nation does not pollute enough yet, our dependence on fossil fuels is not total, particularly from foreign sources and our citizenry still has a ways to go before achieving ultimate obesity -- hey we could all use a few extra pounds in the larder!

What we need more of is millions of fume-spewing SUVs and obese drivers sitting contentedly in hours of bumper-to-bumper traffic, texting away, and wallowing in the living room entertainment centers that autos have blessedly become.
