Although Portugal’s Buraka Som Sistema is closely associated with Angolan dance rhythm kuduro and “progressive” kuduro, the group's electronic hybrid of the southwest African dance rhythm mixed with techno, house and other club beats, the quintet doesn’t stop there. This Lisbon-based dj/emcee/producer collective fuses many African- and Afro-diasporic rhythms, including baile funk and soca, with drum ‘n’ bass, dubstep, and more to create its potent and highly-addictive bass-heavy dance music.

Buraka Som Sistema -- Kalaf Angelo, Andro “Conductor” Carvalho, João “Lil John” Barbosa, Rui “DJ Riot” Pité, and newest member, Blaya--has released three albums since forming in 2006. The crew, which gets its moniker from its Lisbon neighborhood (Buraca) and the Portuguese words for "Sound System," put out Komba, their latest album, last fall.
