Nancy Dallavalle, chair of the department of religious studies at Fairfield University -- a Jesuit school in Fairfield, CT -- talks about the elevation of New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan to cardinal and other news in the Catholic Church.
"kind humble sort of guy",give my arse a break...!!
Timothy Dolan is a pompous, arrogant, bigoted bully. It is a miracle that he has so many people (apparently Dallavalle and Mr. Lehrer among them)in his thrall.
Sorry, I meant to say, about the second root, "heart" (i.e., colored like the heart).
1. cardo, cardin- (Latin)2. kardia (Greek)
Spiritually speaking, the RC Church is irrelevant. As a former RC, they are, to me, like another government who exercises its own laws and elects its own people, though undemocratically. They don't represent God nor teach parishioners to read the Bible which, last time I checked is the only divine inspired book we have.
Re: the origin of the word "cardinal," denoting both the church official and the bird:
I think the 2 words stem from different roots, one meaning "principal" or "hinge" and the other meaning "red."
Too bad the linguistic q. about the word "cardinal" came at the end! I'm wondering how it fits in w/cardinal (vs. ordinal) numbers, & even "cardinal sins"!
Isn't the case for celibacy also an issue of finance? That way, congregations or the church didn't have to take care of widows and their children when the priest died. I thought that was a significant part of it.
To John, By allowing known pedophiles to stay in parishes working with children is a crime.
Cardinal Dolan received a cake as a gift on being nominated to be a cardinal. He quipped that he would give it to the hungry: himself at four o'clock that afternoon.Archbiship Dolan does not look like a man who knows deprivation.
The Archbishop of NY lives in that wonderful mansion just behind and on the same block with St Patrick's Cathedral but facing onto Madison Avenue.
I'm not Catholic, don't really care, but teach at a Jesuit University (Fordham). The Deans took great pride in the late Card. Avery Dulles, who drove an old clunker. People were shocked that a Cardinal AND a Dulles drove such an old beater. He explained that he had, after all, taken a vow of poverty.
"gets away with committing lots of crimes for which you and I would go to jail."Anything to support this, or just idle chat?
Father Guido Sarducci (a/k/a/ Don Novello) once pointed out on Saturday Night Live, there is nothing like the red piping on a monsignor's cassock to bring out the good veal in an Italian restaurant. Imagine what a red cardinal's hat rates!
Well, I'm not sure if you are or are not right about it being newsworthy to most of us...but to me at least, it is NOT.
You keep saying "What the promotion means!" Well it means he gets to spy for the Pope/Vatican wherever he goes. Remember Franny Spellmen's work during WWII? He gets a church in Rome (possibly a fabulous renaissance or baroque one), he gets to vote for a new Pope and he gets lots of bennies you and I couldn't imagine and he gets away with committing lots of crimes for which you and I would go to jail. What's interesting about this is that now NYC has two cardinals, can you imagine that! Two Cardinals in NYC because that other one, the useless one who preceded him as Archbishop of NY is still alive somewhere. Now, how many cities outside of Rome has more than one Cardinal. WOW!! Cool!
Why is the media in NYC so obsessed over the Cardinalate and RC Church in this is is beyond me. Why do you care? They only matter because you make them matter and they don't really matter as much as you make them matter. This is truly un-news to most of us... I bet I'm right on this one!
