When I used to work in Manhattan, many a days I would stand in the first car and watch as the train went thru the tunnels. What used to facinate me is the E line in Queens. There were many tunnels that veered off to the right that seemed to lead to nowhere. (around the Kew Gardens/Van Wyck area). I always wondered if they were planned tunnels that were never finished. I also hear the Archer Avenue tunnels strech far into Queens past Linden. I do not know if this is true.

I called in to your 1/3 transit show but it was too late in the hour for me to be put on the air. I have been troubled for years with a question about the NYC transit system:

Why do the uptown and downtown express tracks share a platform at the Penn Station 1,2,3 subway, and the local tracks are off to the sides, such that you can't simply cross the platform to get to/from the express/local?

All other express stations, as far as I know, are designed so that the uptown (and downtown) local and express share a platform, allowing easy crossing from one to the other.

What is the reason explanation for this anomaly?

Why not extend the MTA across the Hudson River? Jersey City is much closer to Manhattan than Staten Island is.

Really Brian, dream on. There are so many things wrong with this city and it all starts with the corruption and skimming off and pocketing. This city is so backwards and NYers are blind to it. It's not just these subways that have been postponed and delayed and promised and never done then if started (2nd av?) now costs a gazillion times more than planned due to the aforementioned corruption. There's no real line to the airports like all other civilized cities throughout the world. The WTC is 10+ yrs gone and it's not even 1/2 done yet. Were this SE Asia the building would have been completed within 2-3 years. This plan and than plan all remain plans even after the money is put up... then disappears by the time the project is brought up again years later. This city is back in 1950. This city is not what NYers claim it is... the greatest city in the world, it just ain't. I was born here but I've been around. Folks, this is not the greatest city in the world.

If there were ever a line built to service south-eastern Brooklyn - affordable housing and development will almost certainly follow.

Is there any interest in doing a version that showed all the old streetcar lines?
In some places in the city you can actually see those tracks!

I had always presumed the 91st St. IRT station was closed because it was so close to 96th St. Was there ever a systematic closing program? Why is there a stop at 18th on the no. 1 train, which seems unnecessary since there is one at 23rd, then 14th?

Are these unused tunnels and stations somewhat maintained, in case, in the far off future the US, NY State and city were ever to be fiscally abundant again, that planners good utilize to continue to build the system?
