Playing at Anthology Film Archives
(32 Second Ave., Noho, Manhattan)
Get: Tickets ($12) | Directions

Jazz chanteuse Sara Serpa was born in Lisbon, Portugal. Before she came to the U.S. to study jazz and improvised music at the Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory, Serpa studied classical music and piano at the Conservatory of Music in Portugal.

Now the 31-year-old singer and composer, who happens to also hold a college social work degree, calls New York City home, and is the leader of her own quintet, which includes guitarist André Matos, pianist Kris Davis, bassist Ben Street and drummer Ted Poor .

Serpa performs her improvisational jazz with Matos at the Anthology Film Archives on Wednesday night before she heads back home for the holidays to play shows in Lisbon. Check out the show, which will also feature video animations courtesy of André da Loba, or download "Sem Razão" above, a tune from Serpa's album Mobile (Inner Circle Music) that showcases her eerie melodic vocal dexterity.

Below, Serpa, Matos and Davis play Barcelona's San Miguel Mas i Mas Festival with Masa Kamaguchi on double bass and Tommy Crane on drums.
