Jury Selection Begins in Trial of Ex-Bloomberg Aide

Monday, September 19, 2011

Jury selection will begin Monday in the trial of a political operative who worked on Mayor Michael Bloomberg's bid for a third term and is charged will stealing more than $1 million from the mayor.

Prosecutors say John Haggerty got the mayor to give the state Independence Party $1.2 million for a party-wide poll-watching initiative in 2009 when Bloomberg, unaffiliated, was running for re-election and was the Independence Party's top candidate.

Haggerty is accused of pocketed most of the money rather than using it as planned.

He said he did the work he was paid to do.

A judge has ordered prosecutors and defense lawyers not to talk about the case outside court.
