Drawing a name from the Middle East and a sound from singer Zach Condon’s nostalgia-dusted imaginings of old Europe, Beirut blasted out of the American southwest in 2006 with Gulag Orkestar, an album that combined indie rock cool and world music eclectica. Two records later, Beirut has drifted away from its neo-Balkan premise with 2011's The Rip Tide. It includes this single, "East Harlem," an old fashioned American rock 'n' roll song about the conceptual distance separating the downtown author from his love uptown. As always with Beirut, there are trumpets aplenty.
