Torontonian guitar whiz Matthew Stevens got some serious shine in the jazz world for playing on Yesterday You Said Tomorrow from New Orleans trumpeter Christian Scott, a rock and pop-nuanced album that  led to a performance with the Roots on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, among other places. On that album, Stevens’ ethereal guitar textures strayed from jazz orthodoxy and helped set the tone. On his own recordings, including this version of the standardIris,” in which an understated and laid-back Stevens’ weaves rectangular guitar mazes both melodic and modern at the same time.
