The Burlington, Vt. ice cream company Ben & Jerry's announced on Wednesday that it had unveiled a new limited-batch flavor: Schweddy Balls. The name of the dessert is a reference to the irreverent Saturday Night Live (SNL) sketch starring Ana Gasteyer and Molly Shannon as hosts of the (fake) public radio show "The Delicious Dish." Alec Baldwin plays Pete Schweddy, the owner of Season’s Eatings Bakery. (check out the sketch in the video below.)
“For a long time, I thought that 'Here Lies Pete Schweddy' would end up on my tombstone,” Baldwin said in a Ben & Jerry's press release. “Now, thanks to Ben & Jerry's, the goodness of the Schweddy family recipe won't go with me to the great beyond.”
The new ice cream flavor will be at stores nationwide while supplies last. It's made with Fair Trade vanilla ice cream, a hint of rum and fudge-covered rum balls and milk chocolate malt balls.
“It is immortalized here, right now, and it's an ice cream," said Baldwin, who will host SNL's season premiere on Sept. 24. "Ben & Jerry's and Schweddy. Two great names in American dessert, together at last.”
"The Schweddy Balls sketch was a personal favorite from my SNL run, so I am pleased as holiday punch that Ben and Jerry's has taken it upon themselves to share the Schweddy Family recipe with the world," she said. "As a person and a performer, I am a sucker for holiday balls. And I have no doubt this ice cream will cause many to scream 'Good Times.'"
The CEO of Ben & Jerry's, Jostein Solheim, said he was a longtime fan of the late-night comedy show and its writers.
