Water Surges Into Rural Villages in Catskills

Tropical Storm Irene walloped much of upstate New York — including Delaware County where the torrential rains sent water gushing down the main streets of rural villages in the Catskills proved deadly and caused widespread damage in the area.

Of the 191 storm-related rescues statewide, 124 were in the Catskills region alone. The villages of Margaretville and Fleischmanns were under a state of emergency, according to WBNG.

"We've had some terrible flooding here," said Lissa Harris, editor of watershedpost.com, who chronicled the devastation on her site. "And it’s slowly draining down to the more low-lying areas."

Rozalia Gluck, 82, of Brooklyn drowned after flood waters caused the partial collapse of the Valkyrian Motel in the western Catskill Mountain community of Fleischmanns.

Rescue workers plucked stranded residents from boats as the storm devastated downtowns, Harrais said. About 120 residents took shelter in the Belleayre Mountain ski resort over the weekend.
