Donna Gaffney, trauma specialist and co-founder of 4 Action Initiative, and MaryEllen Salamone, co-founder of the Families of September 11, explore what teachers have learned from talking to kids about 9/11 for 10 years. They discuss the curriculum they helped develop with other volunteers from Liberty Science Center and the New Jersey Commission on Holocaust Education, titled "Learning from the Challenges of Our Times: Global Security, Terrorism, and 9/11 in the Classroom."

The most telling comment about "teaching 9/11" came near the end of the program, when the program was described as "non-political." First- to third-graders obviously aren't ready to address the political side of 9/11 and ifs aftermath, but above that age, It's impossible to be honest at all about 9/11 without confronting the way the event was immediately hijacked by the Bush administration as an excuse for a wildly destructive decade of near-endless wars based on lies, not to mention torture, invasion of privacy, and violation of the Constitution. Deeper than that, the culture of fear and divisiveness spawned by the Bush administration's redefinition of 9/11 has left permanent scars on the collective American pysche. There is no hope for healing that by ignoring it or denying it.

The 9-11 attacks didn't happen in a void.
It is not about what happened but WHY it happened.
Set aside the myth of "they did it because the hate freedom ( or us)". Honestly it was nothing but the chickens came home to roost. Years of dealing with, protecting and promoting criminals all in the name of National Interests put US civilians in the line of fire. We got a black eye after years of many US governments sticking their fingers into many other people's eyes.
