The Federal Bureau of Investigation has opened an investigation into allegations that News Corp.'s U.K.-based tabloid News of the World tried to hack into the phones of victims of September 11, 2001, a law enforcement official confirms the investigation to WNYC.
A spokesman for New York-based News Corp had no comment.
The FBI's move comes after several Congressmen called on the bureau and other federal agencies to investigate the company after the British newspaper The Daily Mirror reported the phones of 9-11 victims may have been hacked.
On Wednesday, Rep. Peter King (R-New York) wrote to the FBI Director Robert Mueller, urging him to investigate New Corp. When asked about the investigation, the Congressman said in a statement, "I have not been notified by the FBI but if they do go ahead with the investigation I will be very gratified."
News Corp has been trying to control the growing scandal after initial reports that the paper accessed the voice mail of a murdered English teenager. The company has since shut down the News of the World.
