Hugh, I think its even worse: Dont be evil. A company who choses a slogan like that must be aware of the risk of becoming evil. Or be percieved to be evil / potentially evil.

The "Lego-colors" is an obvious attempt to evoke more harmless associations. Sergey Brin, Eric Schmidt and Larry Page play with Lego when they receive visitors. Its so manipulative.

What was Google's motto? "Don't be bad" ?

Mr. Lopate's guest is -- obviously -- pro-Google, but NOBODY outside the google groupies believes that Google is _not_ weighting results these days.

I interviewed at Google a few years back. People were very enthusiastic about me, but that vanished immediately they saw me---their faces fell. Perhaps I am hideously ugly, but I think it more likely that I was obviously in my forties.

I have heard similar stories from people even more obviously brilliant than I. Perhaps we're all just cry-babies with exaggerated senses of our talents and/or their usefulness to Google...but perhaps Google are wasting a potential pool of employees.

That being said, I'd say that Google were handling their power better than Microsoft had done.
