The Story of the Earth Liberation Front

Wednesday, June 22, 2011

Director Marshall Curry discusses his documentary “If a Tree Falls: The Story of the Earth Liberation Front,” which tells of the rise and fall of an anarchist environmental group, the ELF. The film focuses on the evolution of the group and the transformation and radicalization of Daniel McGowan, one of its members, and poses questions about environmentalism, activism, and the way we define terrorism. “If a Tree Falls” opens June 22 at IFC Center.

I have seen the film, and I think it's fantastic. I encourage anyone who can to see it - very well made and thought provoking. More info on Daniel McGowan is here: .

I grew up in Oregon and was in the Northwest for much of the ELF's major actions. I knew many many people involved with the movement, if not ELF, and I can say there was a MAJOR disconnect in philosophy between the police (as political enforcers) and the environmental movement.
THANKS YOU for called the 1999 WTO protests "protests" and not "riots."
I was there for that too, at work in downtown Seattle in a tie, and watched the police brutality and antagonization of peaceful protesters from my office window. It was horrible. My girlfriend and I had police guns trained on us as we walked home.
