Jerusalem on Broadway

Friday, June 03, 2011

Mark Rylance discusses his roles in Jez Butterworth’s new play “Jerusalem.” The show won the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Foreign Play and earned six Tony nominations, including a Best Actor nomination for Rylance. Set in the woods of South West England, it centers on Johnny "Rooster" Byron, who is a wanted man—the council officials want to serve him an eviction notice, his son wants to be taken to the country fair, his stepfather wants to give him a serious kicking, and a motley crew of friends wants his ample supply of drugs and alcohol.

Saw "Jerusalem" last week - thanks for the interview with MR which helped a deeper understanding of the play.

Re: 'Dormitory Town': I think the American English phrase he's looking for is 'Bedroom Community'. Living in one, I know whereof he speaks.

I'm a huge fan of MR, and was looking forward to seeing him in Jerusalem. I got preview tickets, in fact. My seat was in the balcony and although I am not hard of hearing and good with accents, I couldn't understand half of what was said on stage because of the dreadful miking. It ruined the play for me.

We saw Mark Rylance in Jerusalem last month. I was very impressed, among other things, with the level of energy he put forth in that performance. I'd like to know what he has for breakfast (probably not the raw eggs he drank during the show), because I need to get some of that.
