The Motherf***er with the Hat

Thursday, June 02, 2011

Bobby Cannavale, Elizabeth Rodriguez, and Yul Vazquez talk about starring in “The Motherf***er with the Hat,” Stephen Adly Guirgis’s play about Jackie and Veronica, who have been in love since the 8th grade. Jackie is on parole and living clean and sober under the guidance of his sponsor, Ralph D, while his volatile soul mate Veronica, who is fiercely loving, is far from sober. Their love is so pure and true that it seems like nothing can come between them – except a hat. “The Motherf***er with the Hat” is playing at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre.

Was sucked into this show by the positive press, and then felt as if I were in a muy malo Tyler Perry vignette. Sure, the performances are impassioned, but the material was trite and uninforming..and the show mostly a headache given by characters noone needs to be around.Nothing to be learned from this work.Lo siento....

Saw the show last week and was blown away by the performances. We were at the performance where the show was stopped about an hour in, followed thereafter by a request for a doctor in the house. Having read the NY Times article about Bobby and his proclivity for injury, we couldn't help but wonder, Bobby, was it you? Again? :-)
