The Song of Songs

This New Sounds explores the many different approaches to the musical settings and interpretations of the beautiful poetry of the Biblical Song of Solomon.  We’ll hear from sources as wide-ranging as an English composer and priest in the Eastern Orthodox church, an Ethiopian music icon, and an Israeli singer.

That would be Ivan Moody, singer and keyboardist Teshome Mitiku, (who fronted the Soul Ekos Band, the first in Ethiopia to weld its indigenous sounds to then-popular rock and R&B elements), and Ofra Haza, respectively. Plus, music for cello and processing, with Karen Tanaka’s take on this sensual song of love, blending tender cello, the ancient story and computer technology.  All that, and much more.
