Tenor saxophonist J.D. Allen came to New York from Detroit as a young man to learn from the best, and it paid off. After working with jazz heavyweights such as singer Betty Carter, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Jack DeJohnette, Allen began to make his own way as a formidable saxist. On this original composition from last year's Shine!, Allen injects an enigmatic tune with freewheeling grace while bassist Gregg August matches Allen with some tricky playing of his own. Rounding things out, drummer Rudy Royston anticipates the movement of the piece with sharp percussion. For this week's performances, Tyshawn Sorey replaces Royston on drums.
