Pilot Jokes During Water Landing at Queens Beach

Wednesday, April 06, 2011

The 24-year-old pilot who made an emergency water landing on a Queens beach was cracking jokes as touched down in the surf Monday night.

Jason Maloney of Cornwall, New York, made a reference to a show "Flying Wild Alaska" — which features rough landings — and spoke casually to the air traffic controller, police said.

"Just let us know if we're up in your grill, you know?" Maloney quipped to the air traffic controller.

The pilot later told a detective, "What's the big deal? It happens all the time in Alaska," according to NYPD spokesman Paul Browne.

Jason's father, John, said his son was just trying to help an ailing passenger.
