She’s joined by Jen Small and Mike Yezzi, who raise heritage pigs at Flying Pigs Farm. In Growing Roots: The New Generation of Sustainable Farmers, Cooks, and Food Activists, she profles farmers, beekeepers, fishermen, chefs, food activists, and cheesemongers.

It is the autobiographical story of a woman who took over her family's farm in the 1930's to save it from being lost. may be of interest to anyone who takes over land to keep it the way it was and the challenges one encounters in doing so-

I think communities should pay for the privilege of living near open space, provided by small farms. Small farms provide a beautiful "viewshed" -- serving the common good.

Also please talk about the problems of small-scale, humane slaughter. There is always anxiety brought to the animals in the last days of their lives if they're brought to slaughterhouses, as most meat livestock are. Any news about portable slaughterhouses?

I garden quite a bit and eat locally. My question concerns BPA leaching. So much plastic is used in the process of growing and selling "organic" and local food. It is so hard to find anything anymore that has had no contact with plastic. I know not all plastics are created equal but there is a lot we don't know we don't know about it.

Has anybody seen or done a google mashup of farms/food sources that are at least 50 miles from a:
1. nuclear or coal fired power plant
2. gas fracking zone
3. large military base
4. geographical zone particularly vulnerable to global warming, earthquake or tsunami?

While basic food security may not have traditionally been thought of as a facet of high-end food, I'm sure thinking of it that way now! Between my mistrust of frack water, BP, and now Japan, ALL my reliable food sources have been eviscerated. Along with my primary source of drinking water from our country house.
