More Cross-Cultural Music

« previous episode | next episode »

Friday, April 01, 2011

German percussionist and producer Sven Kacirek collected field recordings from his travels along the Kenyan coast and in the hinterland near Lake Victoria.  Then, with a bit of studio wizardry, he layered marimba, piano, and various other percussion atop the Kenyan musicians.  We’ll listen to this musical journey through Kenya for this New Sounds program.

We’ll also hear Percussionist/composer Cyro Baptista and his touring band, Banquet of the Spirits, take on some of John Zorn’s Masada compositions, from Masada Book Two - The Book of Angels.  Listen to Bombino from Niger, an incredible Tuareg guitarist, who will deliver some loping Saharan blues, along with the latest from the Afro-Peruvian singer Susana Baca.  And more.

Newspeak

Newspeak & Alt-Classical Bands (Weekly Podcast)

For this New Sounds, listen to some "alt-classical" or "indie classical" bands, like Newspeak or the Paul Bailey Ensemble.  Newspeak is an eight-piece amplified ensemble working under the direction of composer David T. Little and clarinetist Eileen Mack. Named after the thought-limiting language in George Orwell’s 1984, Newspeak explores the grey area where art and politics mix.  We'll hear the group, from their "Sweet Light Crude" release, playing a work by Missy Mazzoli - "In spite of all this."
