Ian Rankin tells us what he's been listening to and reading lately after a recent appearance on The Leonard Lopate Show.

What have you read or seen lately (book, play, film, etc.) that moved or surprised you?

One Day by David Nichols (novel) – a very clever conceit (wish I’d thought of it!)—but also characters you care about.

What are you listening to right now?

I’m buying a lot of old vinyl: blues, jazz, 60s-70s rock – yesterday in Cambridge, Mass., I bought an Art Pepper LP. I love his stuff.

What’s the last great book you read?

I reread (for the 10th or 11th time) The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (by Muriel Spark) recently. A brilliant, clever, funny, tragic work of art.

What’s one thing you’re a fan of that people might not expect?

The novels of Anthony Powell – he’s often seen as a social snob, an upper class dilettante – I don’t care – I love his books!

What’s your favorite comfort food?

Curry. A nice, spicy chicken dish with plenty of fresh ginger…
