State Lowers Bar on Sales Tax Exemption for Clothing and Shoes

Friday, March 18, 2011

A sales tax exemption on clothing and shoes is coming back to New York State — but only for some items.

Starting April 1, items that cost less than $55 will not be subject to the state’s 4 percent sales tax.

Previously, the state had enacted a similar break on items costing less than $110.

Several counties in the state still charge a local sales tax on clothing.
