Gig Alert: Toshi Reagon

Toshi Reagon
Playing Thursday at Le Poisson Rouge
(158 Bleecker St., Greenwich Village)
Get: Tickets ($15) | Directions

When you start life as the child of two important civil rights figures and the goddaughter of Pete Seeger, you have some pretty big shoes to fill. Toshi Reagon isn’t doing too bad so far: she’s toured with Lenny Kravitz, composed an opera, and scored a film, just to name a few little accomplishments. As the songwriter, guitarist, and singer of BIGLovely, Reagon blends her soul and folk heritage with a rock-and-roll sensibility, making music that touches on both deep blues and pop songcraft. As a performer, Reagon is known to hold court on the stage with a show equal parts music, storytelling, and community forum. The result is something her small and devoted following calls “church.” This song “Beauty” comes from Reagon’s upcoming album There and Back Again, and it features Meshell Ndegeocello on bass and Bobby Burke on drums.
