A Secret Affair

Tuesday, March 08, 2011

What happens when two spies fall in love? It sounds like the beginning of a riddle, but for Robert Baer and Dayna Baer, it was simply their life. Stationed in Croatia in the early 1990s, Robert was a seasoned agent biding his time and Dayna was an up and comer hoping to learn from a veteran and then get out. In The Company We Keep: A Husband-and-Wife True-Life Spy Story, the Baers recount their unlikely affair and what happened once they tried to leave The Company.

I find some of the comments here even more depressing than the thought of the sacrifices that these people have made (more or less consciously) while trying to help the American in a way they believed to be "right" at the time.
It seems quite obvious that they have been haunted by doubts and probably will be for the rest of their lives.
If that is not heroic, I have no idea of what is.

Too bad Lenny didn't get their take on the CIA operative charged with murder in Pakistan.

Why do we even have the CIA/NSA? Can someone remind me what these oafish psychopaths have EVER done right? Oh wait, "we'll never know" because all the successes stay secret and the unending public failures are just counter-intel piped to the media in order to dupe our foes into thinking our intelligence services are staffed by ego maniacal chicken sheet hicks brainwashed into thinking they are saving the world for Democracy. Yup, it's all one big "OP". LOL

Why did each of the Baers marry non CIA persons before marrying each other? Is it not a selfish act to subject a spouse and children to the life of CIA agent?

@ Soupygirl

Agreed, these two are monsters. Entertaining monsters but monsters nonetheless.

hmmm. These two are scary. What makes us think that these are their real names? Or anything being said is true? It's definitely a crazy life--best without children in the picture!

Why didn't they go stay somewhere around Tel Aviv or Haifa? Why Beirut?

Just heard the ad for the membership drive - with the fellow with the nasal voice talking about opting for good European chocolate - I take issue with that - NY is full of fine artisinal chocolatiers like Jacques Torres and Kees to mention two - fresh and so yummy.

Many Muslim Bosnians were incorporated into the SS during WWII, and were complicit the murder of hundreds of thousands of Serbs and tens of thousands of Jews in WWII. It should be no surprise that Hezbollah and Iran would be behind the Bosnians in the Yugoslav civil wars.

I wonder if resigning really ends the Cia/agent relationship. Aren't they still tracked, given what/who they know?

Mar. 08 2011 12:21 PM

You mean agents are not prepped for this reality of lying to loved ones? How many agents deep in the thick of it choose to get involved with non-agents by getting married and having children?
