For Valentine’s Day, we’ll try to demystify relationships and learn how to improve them using classic economic principles. And we’ll look at how couples manage their finances. Then, tales of nine ordinary couples who met in one of New York City’s iconic public spaces and ended up getting married. And speaking of iconic couples—James Maddalena and Janis Kelly talk about playing Richard and Pat Nixon in the Metropolitan Opera revival of “Nixon in China.” Plus, Harlem Globetrotters legend Curly Neal and current player Buckets Blakes talk about the team’s 85th season on tour.

Spousonomics, Marriage, and Money

Paula Szuchman and Jenny Anderson, authors of Spousonomics: Using Economics to Master Love, Marriage, and Dirty Dishes, explain how principals of economics can be applied to improving marriage and relationships. They’re joined by Jessica Grose, who has written a series on on how couples manage their finances.

Ariel Sabar, whose own parents met in Washington Square Park, tells the true stories of nine ordinary couples—from the 1940s to the present—who married after first meeting in one of New York City's iconic public spaces. He tells those stories in Heart of the City: Nine Stories of Love and Serendipity on the Streets of New York.

"Nixon in China" at the Metropolitan Opera

James Maddalena, who plays Richard Nixon, and Janis Kelly, who plays Pat Nixon, discuss the John Adams’ Grammy–winning opera “Nixon in China,” playing now at the Metropolitan Opera. Adams described the opera, about President Nixon’s 1972 visit to Mao Tse-tung in China, as “part epic, part satire, part parody of political posturing, and part serious examination of historical, philosophical, and even gender issues.”

The Harlem Globetrotters

Harlem Globetrotters legend Curly Neal and current player Buckets Blakes talk about the legendary team and how it has influenced the game of basketball. The Globetrotters’ are on the “4 Times the Fun” tour across North America, and are playing six games in the New York area February 18-21.
