Rock icon Syd Barrett is often remembered through tales of excess, but a new biography recounts the late Pink Floyd co-founder's life on more even-handed terms. Today, we look past the sensationalism to find the real Syd. Later: The band Stornoway combines Ph.D. smarts with folk-pop hooks. They perform live in the studio.

2011's Grammy Nominees
