Survival Kit

GARTH FAGAN

Sunday, June 09, 2002

Garth Fagan has always been seen as something of a recluse in the dance world. He and his company have won all of the major dance awards and have toured the world, but they are based in the relatively out-of-the-way city of Rochester, New York. Now I’ve asked him to take his isolation a step further, and spend some time in a remote cabin in the mountains, or perhaps a desert island, and to decide what he would put in his cultural survival kit.

Survival Kit List 1. CD of Bob Marley’s greatest hits 2. A video of “Griot New York” featuring the Wynton Marsalis Septet, the beautiful sculpture by Martin Puryear, and Garth Fagan Dance including the company’s Bessie Award winners: Norwood Pennewell, Steve Humphrey and Sharon Skepple 3. A collection of works by Brahms: Piano Concerto #1, violin concerto, and one or two sonatas 4. Some of Miles Davis’ hits from the Coltrane days and some other modern pieces 5. The Primal Mind by Jamake Highwater 6. A large supply of the hottest hot sauce that can be found!
