Miho Hatori
Sunday, August 30, 2009
Singer/composer Miho Hatori has surprised and delighted listeners with the eccentric pop of her '90s duo Cibo Matto, the Brazilian-inspired sounds of Smokey & Miho, and with the band Gorillaz. Now she brings a new project to the WNYC Studio. With pianist/accordionist/synth-player Shoko Nagai and cellist Helena Espvall, Miho plays and talks about some new songs of her own--as well as a pair of songs by Spinning On Air favorite Connie Converse--with host David Garland.
Cello Songs
Friday, August 21, 2009
The pitch range of the cello is a lot like that of the human voice, so composers often use it as a kind of surrogate singer. But two fascinating new albums of songs feature cellos accompanying vocalists. Both albums are daring and surprising for all sorts of reasons. One is from cellist/composer/singer Jody Redhage and her band Fire In July, and the other is from composer/vocalist Amy X Neuburg and the Cello Chixtet. Host David Garland also has cello-inclusive songs by Orion Rigel Dommisse, Bonfire Madigan, Tanya Tagaq with Chris Dirksen, and Ane Brun.
Sylvain Chauveau
Sunday, August 16, 2009
French composer Sylvain Chauveau creates music of beautiful austerity. It sounds private but not withdrawn; the listener waits with Chauveau for the next note or chord to emerge and unfold, carried along by gentle anticipation. Sylvain first visited Spinning On Air four years ago, and now returns to play us a set of beautiful pieces for solo piano, and to talk about his music and motivations with host David Garland.
Snowblink and Luxury Pond
Sunday, August 09, 2009
Two of host David Garland's favorite musical discoveries of the year--songwriters Daniela Gesundheit and Dan Goldman--come from Toronto to the WNYC Studio to perform and talk about their music. Each accompanies the other in sets of songs by Snowblink (Daniela) and Luxury Pond (Dan), and joining them both is multi-instrumentalist Caley Monahon-Ward. Musically rich and lyrically compelling, the songs are about wearing antlers, planting bulbs, being a shark's brain, and orbiting planets, as well as love and friendship.
