On the Way to Woodstock
Sunday, July 26, 2009
The Woodstock Music & Art Fair, "An Aquarian Exposition," took place in Bethel, New York, 40 years ago this August. It was the nexus--and maybe the climax--of the powerful musical and social forces of the era. Host David Garland offers the sound of the time with music by some of the festival's famous and not-so-famous participants, including Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, Sly and the Family Stone, Jimi Hendrix, Tim Hardin, Melanie, The Incredible String Band, Richie Havens, Joan Baez, Country Joe and the Fish, Ten Years After, and Sweetwater.
Moon Walk
Sunday, July 19, 2009
40 years ago on July 20th men walked on the moon. Ever since the voyage of Apollo 11, public interest in lunar adventures seems to have waned. But there was a lot of enthusiasm for the "conquest" of the moon prior to 1969, and host David Garland has the evidence: pop and jazz songs, psychedelic experiments, and a crater-full of kiddie records, all waxing rhapsodic about what a trip to the moon MIGHT be like. Take off into yesterday's world of tomorrow!
Quiet, Please
Sunday, July 12, 2009

Included are pieces and songs by Gareth Dickson, the Sigur Ros offshoot Riceboy Sleeps, Johann Johannson, Peter Broderick, Nils Frahme, Lullatone, Robert Burger, and an interesting British songwriter, Georgia Seddon, who hasn't been heard on American radio before.

Independents Days: Akron/Family
Sunday, July 05, 2009
Akron Family joins host David Garland for a brand new episode in the 4th of July series, Independents Days. Akron/Family is celebrated for their musical adventurousness, the transcendental spirit in their music, and the crackling excitement of their marathon live shows. Akron/Family visited Spinning On Air in 2005 when their first album was released, and have returned several times since to share their changes and development. The band's latest album is Set 'em Wild, Set 'em Free, and this time they join David live in the WNYC studio for a quiet, informal performance of some of their new songs, and to talk about their continuing musical journey.

David Michael Stith has fashioned an album of songs out of sounds, gestures, and phrases; building them up, orchestrating them, and mixing in memories of childhood games in the dusk, fantasies of surfing in the clouds, and melodies that wind and unfurl. That album is called "Heavy Ghost," and it's new on Sufjan Stevens' Asthmatic Kitty label. DM Stith joins host David Garland to talk about his music-making, and to translate his sprawling album into songs he can play in the WNYC Studio.
