Callers (David Garland/WNYC)Callers
The spare and powerful guitar-and-drums arrangements of Callers provide a dynamic setting for the extraordinary voice of singer Sara Lucas. These former southerners have moved from New Orleans to Brooklyn, bringing with them a bluesy vibe that fits nicely with their sense of daring and experimentation. The band Callers joins host David Garland in the WNYC Studio to perform and talk about their music.

Wow, Sara Lucas is like the uncanny spawn of Karen Dalton and Maryanne Peacock! Excellent!
Woops, that's Annette Peacock, at least in her early years.
Sara Lucas' voice has many qualities similar to Phoebe Snow's
Also, the music is captivating. Thank you!
David
The extremes that New Yorkers go to in order to feel self righteously open minded are utterly sad. This music is horrendous and the fact that it is played an npr is appaling and highlights New Yorkers' ridiculous ideas on culture in general.
WNYC should listen to VPR or NHPR or some other good npr for ideas. I'm happy to remain a close minded country bumpkin if it means I retain some form of taste which filters out chaff.
This music is excellent. I only wish there was a link to the next show. When can I come? Sara's voice is gorgeous!
I think the mix of different styles is very intriguing. Sara's vocals have a deep, folk sound. I like how the notes are slurred together yet always in tune. Then place that with a soulful, beat driven rhythmn section. This is innovative...I was very impressed with the level of musicianship that I heard on the radio today. Long live New Orleans, uptown!
These guys are insane-great!! I've seen them live a couple of times -- Sara's voice is just amazing!!

haha -- the website said my comments weren't being accepted. Anyway.... Callers is worth calling "amazing" FOUR times!
Ryan Seaton and I were went to high school together and were roommates for awhile in college (Kansas City). Those were some great times. Thanks to Ryan I was exposed to certain musical styles and artists that I might not have been exposed to otherwise. I'm truly proud that he's still making and chasing great music. Love the Callers sound very much.
