Theremins
Sunday, October 26, 2008
The theremin is an early 20th Century electronic instrument that has seen a renaissance of interest in its unique sound and performance technique. Host David Garland presents the theremin's elegant and eerie sound played by first generation performers Clara Rockmore, Samuel J. Hoffman, and Paul Tanner, as well as current players such as Lydia Kavina, Pamelia Kurstin, Rob Schwimmer, and Dorit Chrysler.
Musical genres include pop, easy listening, classical, jazz, and experimental, and of course film scores, such as The Day the Earth Stood Still, Earth vs The Spider, The Thing From Another World, My Favorite Martian, and Ed Wood. Thinguma*jigSaw
Sunday, October 12, 2008
Thinguma*jigSaw is a duo from Norway. He, The Severed Headmaster, plays banjo and sings in falsetto. She, Little Myth Epiphanymph, plays musical saw, flute, and melodica. Together they make what they call "splatter-folk"--songs (in English) inspired by old murder ballads, horror movies, musical minimalism, beautiful acoustic sounds, and Norwegian fjords and Irish landscapes. Joining host David Garland in the WNYC Studio, Thinguma*jigSaw performs and talks about their music.
Stars Like Fleas
Sunday, October 05, 2008
Majestic, large-scale and dramatic, yet somehow introverted and delicate, the music of Stars Like Fleas fills the WNYC Studio. This Brooklyn-based band--orchestra, really--joins host David Garland to perform and talk about their music. The nine musicians of Stars Like Fleas include a few multi-instrumentalists, allowing a wide range of colors and dynamics to accompany their self-effacing lead singer, who likes to crouch in a corner, low to the ground.
