“Ilham” is Arabic for “inspiration,” and this collaborative trio relies on the inspiration of the moment and the interplay of three different traditions to create new music with deep roots. Syrian-born vocalist Gaida Hinnawi is featured, weaving her acrobatic, highly emotional singing with the cello of Canadian Rufus Cappadoccia, and the trumpet and santur (Persian hammered dulcimer) of Iraqi-American Amir ElSaffar. Ilham performs in the WNYC Studio and discusses their influences and backgrounds with host David Garland.

Last night's show was my introduction to Spinning on Air, and I was glued to the radio start to finish. Loved every song - a beautiful, interesting mix. Please please post a playlist! I'm excited to hear more from these artists.

The music brings back memories of smells for me for some reason - from the beautiful east. The smell of turkish coffee in the morning, the Yasmen smell, and the Yasmen smell right after rain in a cool night. It also brings back the smell of spices, old downtown, ment with tea ... the smell of home.
