    Laura Marling

Laura Marling’s subtle, engrossing songs are colored with shades of anger, forthrightness, and self-criticism. She sings them with an agile, emotional voice, accompanying herself on guitar. Surprisingly, this British composer of worldly songs is only 17 years old. Laura Marling joins host David Garland to talk about and perform her songs, giving listeners a chance to hear this important new artist in advance of the release of her first album.

Very much enjoying the performance. She's only 17!? I was shocked to hear that. Amazing.

Also, Mr. Garland, I spotted you the other night at Larkin Grimm's performance in Brooklyn (it was on Spinning on Air that I first heard of Larkin Grimm, thanks for that!). I wanted to say hi and thank you profusely for introducing me both to Larkin and to Mahler, two of my favorite people. You did a week of all Mahler on evening music over ten years ago and, though I'd heard Mahler before, that week was when I really caught the bug.

Anyway, thanks for continuing to produce good radio and for bringing so much music to my life.

    Cheers!

I expected to hear that the words to 'alas i cannot swim' were from a thousand year old poem or folk song - as beatiful as her voice.

What beautiful, enchanting songs. Thank you so much for playing the interview, the songs performed live in the studio, and the versions from the album. I hope the album will be available in the US very, very soon--I would buy it in an instant.

Laura, ... What a beautiful voice you have! Both the SOUND of you and your WORDS and REFLECTIONS! You have a TREMENDOUS gift and SUCH potential! For even now, the instrument that is you (poet/singer-songwriter) is so potent! POTENT... POTENTIAL... I am sure I am not alone as I wish you an auspicious career that deepens and clarifies your soulful sound!

    With kindness,

    Deirdre

simply amazing...I love when artists get a chance to be embraced at such a young age like Laura...she has a great and hopefully uncompromising career ahead of her. Thanks.

I too am very impressed and moved by Laura's songwriting. Thanks to you guys for picking up on her and having her on your show. I'm excited to watch such an artist grow.

I just got the CD "Alas I Cannot Swim," and although I love it, alas, the title song is nothing close to the version she performed on Soundcheck. I wish I could find that version and download it as an MP3. If that is ever possible, I hope you'll let us know. In any event, I am thrilled to have discovered Laura Marling through your show -- the the CD IS available through amazon.ca.uk.

Last night I saw her show at Mercury Lounge and it was just fantastic. We learned about Laura Marling from Spinning on Air...and there's starting to be quite a trend in my household of going to shows by SOA guests. Thanks for your awesome recommendations.
