Common Rotation Party!

Sunday, December 30, 2007

Common Rotation is a band of three old friends who have lately been touring peoples’ living rooms to perform their enjoyable songs and gorgeous harmonies. Join the fun as Common Rotation gathers in host David Garland’s living room for a homefried hootenanny broadcast. The band features the voice and guitar of chief songwriter Eric Kufs; the trumpet, flugelhorn, and banjo of Jordan Katz; and vocals and sundries by Adam Busch. Adam’s also an actor known to fans of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” as evil genius Warren Mears. Also joining the party is Amber Benson, who played Tara on “Buffy.”

Electronic Xmas

Sunday, December 23, 2007

From the vault of past Spinnings On Air emerges an old show showcasing the old-fashioned modern sounds of Moog synthesizers, theremins, and more, performing strange versions of familiar Christmas music. Culled mostly from LPs released in the 1960s, there’s nearly enough electricity in these recordings to light your tree. Giving usual host/producer David Garland a night off for last minute shopping, this show is hosted by the robotic voice of a semi-autonomous digital entity.

The Fiery Furnaces

Sunday, December 16, 2007

Matthew and Eleanor Friedberger join host David Garland to distill some of their songs to their essence in performances for just voice and piano. As The Fiery Furnaces, brother and sister Matthew and Eleanor make songs with many layers of narrative, intention, and purpose. Their recordings also feature layers of changeable sound from a large arsenal of keyboards including tack piano and analog synthesizers, along with guitars, drums, and Eleanor’s passionate delivery of plentiful, peculiar lyrics. They’ll perform and also present and talk about their recordings, with special emphasis on their latest album, “Widow City.”

Orion Rigel Dommisse

Sunday, December 09, 2007

Named for both a constellation and its brightest star, Orion Rigel Dommisse nevertheless writes very down-to-earth songs about the astronomy of the human heart. She creates her own insular but engrossing world of music as she sings, accompanying herself on an electric cello which she plucks like an oversized guitar. Orion joins host David Garland in the WNYC Studio to talk about her music and the emotions behind it, and to perform with both her cello, and at the grand piano.

Ora Cogan & Milo Jones

Sunday, December 02, 2007

Two songwriters on tour together pause briefly in the WNYC Studio to each perform a set of their songs. Vancouver-based Ora Cogan wraps her curling vine of a voice around the bluesy melodies of her introspective and soothing songs. Boston-based Milo Jones uses his agile and intimate voice to sing startling tales of misanthropy. Host David Garland invites them in and talks with Ora about her music; Milo prefers singing to talking.
