Et Ret

Sunday, April 30, 2006

Is it backwoods chamber music? Or backwards chamber music? Or backwards chamber music from the backwoods of Brooklyn? It isn't easy to describe the music produced by James Angelos' group Et Ret. Using fiddles, electric guitars and percussion, the group weaves their own path through the worlds of minimalism, classical music, and folk fiddling drones. Intrigued by this uncategorizable sound, host David Garland has invited Et Ret into the WNYC Studio to play a live set, and to talk a little about their music.

W-S Burn

Sunday, April 23, 2006

Simultaneously stark, intense, warm, and involving, the Tennessee-based duo W-S Burn make a special visit to New York to play on Spinning On Air. Steve plays guitar (acoustic and electric), and Pixie sings. She also strings metal and glass chimes from the shade of a floor lamp, which then serves as both illumination and percussion for their performance. W-S Burn have put out a few hand-made, lo-fi CDR releases, but host David Garland wants to give them more exposure, and to see what happens when the duo's sharply focused, highly emotional songs meet up with WNYC's hi-fi microphones.

The Puzzling Music Archive includes free downloads of recordings by W-S Burn.

Akron/Family

Sunday, April 16, 2006

With the musical imagination and ability to encompass gentle four-part vocal harmonies, wild improvisation, rock 'n' roll power, and a spirit that's enlivening and enlightening, the young Brooklyn-based group Akron/Family has burst on the scene during the last year. Spinning On Air was an early champion of their refreshing music, and one of host David Garland's dreams comes true as Akron/Family joins him in the WNYC studio, not to talk about their music (which they've done on the show before), but to give in-studio the kind of powerful performance that’s been thrilling audiences at their live shows. For this session the basic quartet is supplemented by trumpeter Ed Sortman.

New Releases and Unreleases

Sunday, April 09, 2006

Host David Garland gives you your first chance to hear some wonderfully imaginative new music. Composer Amy Kohn visits to present some songs from her new CD "I'm In Crinoline." We'll also hear from the forthcoming Danielson (Daniel Smith of the Danielson Famile) album "Ships," and also "The Only Thing I Ever Wanted" from the group Psapp. Songwriter Viking Moses has recorded a trilogy of great albums which aren't even scheduled for release yet, but we get to preview some songs on this show.

Currituck County

Sunday, April 02, 2006

Guitarist, singer and composer Kevin Barker performs and records as Currituck County, creating songs that blend traditional finger-picking virtuosity with experimental forms and thoughtful introspection. Kevin has performed on Spinning On Air before with Antony and the Johnsons, and just last week with Vashti Bunyan. This time he fulfills a long-standing invitation to play his own music in the WNYC Studio. Kevin joins host David Garland to talk about his experiences and influences, and to use his guitar to pilot us past the rocky shores of genre presumptions and conventions.
