Sam Rosen, Nat Baldwin, & Deer Tick
Sunday, January 29, 2006
Three young songwriters drop in to the WNYC Studio and join host David Garland to play and talk bout their music. Sam Rosen just turned 18, but he's already busily touring, and here he shows us what he's up to so far. Nat Baldwin has been on Spinning On Air before, as a member of Dirty Projectors. This time he accompanies himself on bowed double-bass as he sings his unusual songs and tells about his transition from hitting a wall in experimentalism to opening his own door into song. John McCauley presents his band Deer Tick, along with bassist Jessica and drummer Paul, and sings about blood moons and dirty dishes. Catch some songwriters as they're beginning to find their own voices.
Song Shapes
Sunday, January 22, 2006
If this collection of songs were a sculpture exhibit, you'd see large, branching forms, little curlicues, boxes-within-boxes, daintily shaped human figures, welded girders, and unchiseled blocks of marble. On exhibit are songs by people who are offering new options for the shape of songs: Wooden Wand and the Vanishing Voice, Alvin Curran, Little Wings, Becky Stark, Ana Moura, Islaja, Elephant Micah, Diane Cluck, Amy Kohn, and others.
Downlode

There's great music on the Internet that's available at the click of a mouse. Lots of imaginative, wonderful music has been made available free by its creators, just so it can be heard. Host David Garland has been filling his hard drive with some obscure treasures, and offers some of the best on this show, with links so you can get the songs yourself. There's great stuff by groups you probably haven't heard before, but will probably want to hear again: Golden Ball, Shapes and Sizes, Au Revoir Simone, The Physics of Meaning, W-S Burn, and The Weird Weeds. The centerpiece of the program is "Seven New Songs of Mount Eerie," a beautiful suite of songs about the woods, thoughtfulness, and what braids might say if they could sing, by Phil Elvrum, a guy eloquently connected to his unique muse.
