The Incredible String Band

Friday, March 25, 2005

The original Psych-Folk ensemble, The Incredible String Band, joins host David Garland to talk about their long career and to perform in the WNYC studio. Visiting the U.S. for the first time in 30 years, the British group has timed things well to coordinate with a resurgence of interest in their trailblazing, imaginative music. While most hippies were plugging in electric guitars, The ISB were using acoustic guitars, sitars, fiddles, lutes, and a vast range of other instruments to make wildly creative songs of rough-hewn virtuosity. They're first albums were released in the mid-Sixties, and their visit to Spinning On Air will bring us up to date.

Viking Moses, Jana Hunter, & Spenking

Friday, March 18, 2005

The soulful presence of the young, wandering songwriter Viking Moses (Brendon Massei) was first felt when he visited Spinning On Air back in November, as part of Devendra Banhart's band White Buffalo Deer Woman Appears. This time Viking Moses returns with his own band to perform casual yet intense songs from his album "Crosses," which form reflections on a profound love that hit him one night on the railroad tracks. Texas-born, Brooklyn-based songwriter Jana Hunter sings back-up for Viking Moses, and then presents a set of her own avant-bluesy folk-art songs. And Brendon's pianist, Spenking (Spencer Kingman), steps forth to accompany himself on guitar for some of his own delicate, stinging songs. Plus host David Garland presents music by still more Viking Moses band members, Alec K. Redfern and Adam Mitchell.

Animal Collective visit WNYC

Friday, March 04, 2005

The group Animal Collective uses common means (vocals, acoustic guitars, and simple percussion) to make extraordinary music. Their songs seem to come from a parallell dimension, where the familiar fundamentals of song obey a different set of natural laws. We may be able to get some insight into how Animal Collective create their musical mutations, as three of the four band members—Avey Tare, Deaken, and Geologist—join host David Garland to talk about their music and share some unreleased live recordings in the WNYC studio.
