Sometimes musicians like to look at ideas from more than one angle (or more than one song), and they may want to tell a story and take the listener on a journey. Then we find ourselves in the territory of the "concept album," a group of interconnected songs which, through its scope, tries to touch on some big ideas. Here are two albums, one old"S.F. Sorrow" by The Pretty Thingsand one new"Mount Eerie" by The Microphoneswhich deal with the subjects of life and death and mountain journeys, and do so with a group of imaginative songs and surprising sounds. We'll hear both albums from start to finish. Host David Garland also presents selections from the album "The Isle" by World Standard and Wechsel Garland, an album of elegant instrumentals that explore a musical island and enjoy its serenity.
John Kelly sings Joni Mitchell on the radio for the first time when he joins David Garland on Spinning On Air. Accompanied by pianist Zecca Esquivel (who appears as artist Georgia O’Keefe in concert), Kelly performs several Joni Mitchell songs, and dicusses what the songs mean to him, as well as his encounters with Mitchell herself. Kelly also shares some of his other vocal projects and talks about his lengthy career at the vanguard of Performance Art.
Once again host David Garland presents musicians who, through subtle and/or drastic measures, stretch and expand the possibilities of song. This time all artists are new to the show. Glasgow-based Richard Youngs' 20-minute-long "Red Cloud Singular" is a meditative abstraction, The Microphones' songs leap through varying textures, Akron/Family combine plainess and grandeur, Khaela Maricich twists her songs gently, and Deerhoof bite their songs into chunks. Also heard are Doug Cullen, Spokane, Six Organs of Admittance, and several others.
This time Spinning On Air offers some engaging and surprising responses to the age-old request: Tell me a story! In these stories, music adds a special dimension, making the story more dramatic, more vivid, more exciting, or just more strange than it would otherwise be.
