Espers and Psych-Folk

Friday, May 28, 2004

The group Espers plays psych-folk. At least that's the category some have placed them in, a category that hasn't had much use since the late 1960s when groups such as The Incredible String Band were making a kind of poetic, experimental, acoustic psychedelia. Now, in 2004, we find ourselves in the midst of a psych-folk revival. The six young Philadelphia-based musicians of Espers visit with host David Garland, and perform several of their moody, subdued-but-intense songs in the WNYC studio. After their live set, Espers become guest DJs, sharing old and new recordings they love.

John Kelly sings Joni Mitchell

Friday, May 21, 2004

John Kelly sings Joni Mitchell on the radio for the first time when he joins David Garland on Spinning On Air. Accompanied by pianist Zecca Esquivel (who appears as artist Georgia O’Keefe in concert), Kelly performs several Joni Mitchell songs, and dicusses what the songs mean to him, as well as his encounters with Mitchell herself. Kelly also shares some of his other vocal projects and talks about his lengthy career at the vanguard of Performance Art.

The Refined and the Raw

Friday, May 14, 2004

Argentinian singer/songwriter Juana Molina balances beautiful simplicity with sonic complexity in her songs, mingling her gentle voice and guitar with percolating pots of caffeinated electronics. The refined and the raw also combine in the glitchy tenderness of Mum, the dour joy of Greg Weeks, and the quiet scream of Michael Gira. This show also features some instrumentals and songs by The Vanity Set, Slim Gaillard, John Barry, David Byrne, Fred Frith, etc., plus host David Garland offering the occasional entertaining exhortation to become a member of WNYC.
