Acoustic Guitar

Friday, April 30, 2004

"Acoustic guitar, how lovely you are," allege the lyrics of a song by The Magnetic Fields, and this show offers ample proof to back up that statement. We'll hear acoustic guitars in the brand new CDs, "Rejoicing In the Hands," by Devendra Banhart, and "I," the latest from The Magnetic Fields themselves. Also, finger-picking soliloquies by Jack Rose and by John Fahey; and the acoustic guitar as accompaniment in the strangely murky "Campfire Songs" by Animal Collective, the intimate songs of Nick Drake, Michael Gira, and more.

Mia Doi Todd

Friday, April 23, 2004

Mia Doi Todd's songs are quietly intense and draw the listener in to her provocative words with austere accompaniments. Though there's a stern beauty to her music, Mia herself is affable, and on this edition of Spinning On Air the young, Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter joins host David Garland in WNYC's studio to perform and discuss her songs. Also, hear The Legendary Pink Dots; music from those jesters of juxtaposition, The Polygraph Lounge; a pair of songs from Lily & Maria's one-and-only album of psych-folk from 1968; and contemporary West Coast singer/songwriter Liz Janes.

Evocative Songs

Friday, April 16, 2004

Songs whose words are focused but enigmatic can be very evocative. What they evoke may be different for every listener, but they provide rich soil for the blossoming of interpretation, meaning, and importance. Joanna Newsom is a young songwriter who accompanies herself on the harp as she sings her vivid, mysterious songs. Newsom's album "The Milk-Eyed Mender" is featured on this show, which also includes brand new (and in several cases not-yet-released) songs by Patti Smith, Mum, St. Thomas, David Byrne, Rachel Yamagata, TV on the Radio, The Morpholinos, Iron and Wine, Br. Danielson, and Brian Woodbury's Variety Orchestra.

Tell Me a Story

Friday, April 09, 2004

This time Spinning On Air offers some engaging and surprising responses to the age-old request: Tell me a story! In these stories, music adds a special dimension, making the story more dramatic, more vivid, more exciting, or just more strange than it would otherwise be.

Poetry, Awake and Asleep

Friday, April 02, 2004

Dion McGregor was a dreamer—and you can listen to him dream, because Dion McGregor talked in his sleep and his dreams were recorded! Stream of consciousness was never so natural, real, or bizarre as on these tapes made while McGregor slept, and talked his way through his dreams. In addition to McGregor's virtuoso dreams, you can hear interviews with Michael Barr, who recorded them, and Phil Milstein, who produced a CD of Dion's dreams.
