John Cage's Sonatas and Interludes for Prepared Piano, with Adam Tendler
Sunday, September 02, 2012
The 100th anniversary of the birth of the influential composer John Cage is coming up this Wednesday, Sept. 5th. David Garland welcomes pianist Adam Tendler for an introduction to the unusual, beautiful sounds of Cage's Sonatas and Interludes for Prepared Piano, and some of the ideas and thoughts behind them, and to learn about Tendler's experiences getting to know the work. Composed in the late 1940s, the Sonatas and Interludes offer the surprising sonorities of a piano transformed by the insertion of bolts, screws, bits of rubber, and other items in among the piano strings. Featured are highlights from Tendler's performance of the piece recorded at Seabury Hall, Maui, on June 28, 2008.
