Mountains

« previous episode | next episode »

Sunday, February 07, 2010

The musical landscapes of Mountains include lush valleys and vertiginous heights, gentle slopes and walks in the clouds. This Brooklyn-based duo of childhood friends Koen Holtkamp and Brendon Anderegg uses plugged-in acoustic guitars and an array of electronics to create a dense sound full of detail. Host David Garland welcomes Mountains to the WNYC Studio to perform and talk about their music.

When we talk about mountain music many assume we mean American country music or fiddle playing to square dancing. In classical music in the age of Romanticism ALL composers reveled in nature and mountains and snow-capped peaks. Beethoven's Symphony #6 the Pastoral symphony delights also in nature's animal kingdom. Wagner's operas abound in mountainous, even a fire-girt one to protect Brunnhilde from any but the bravest hero to defy fire to reach her.
Brahms would walk mountain paths to "converse" with nature. Who can forget the scary Moussorgsky "Night on Bald Mountain" particularly as Walt Disney animated it in his film "Fantasia". Shakespeare makes dramatic use of forests and mountains in his plays. "As You Like It" takes place in the Arden Forest. Kenneth Bennett Lane, director of Richard Wagner Music Drama Institute, where artists are trained for all the roles of Wagner's operas and all the Shakespeare roles. Wagner and Shakespeare, in a sense were plateaus above other genius "mountains". www.WagnerOpera.com
