The Wingdale Community Singers Return

« previous episode | next episode »

Sunday, November 22, 2009

A community of Brooklyn-based songwriters, The Wingdale Community Singers continues the old folk tradition of keenly observed songs about the worlds around us and within us. Comprised of novelist Rick Moody, visual artist Nina Katchadourian, and composers Hannah Marcus and David Grubbs, the band, along with bassist Elyssa Linowes, returns to Spinning On Air to sing songs from their new album "Spirit Duplicator," and talk with host David Garland.

"Bike Shop Boy" performed today, 11:50am, on 'Studio 360,' which repeats today I think in the afternoon.
Awfully nice.
Nice story about how the group named itself - "Wingdale," a monstrous, looming, ex-state psychiatric hospital in the Town of Dover, Dutchess County. The place will be converted in the coming years into a new mixed-use community of housing, shopping, recreation, with existing MTA train stop. But the old Wingdale is more evocative!

Great music. Good programming.

"Bike Shop Boy" (a wonderful song, I agree) was performed during the Wingdale's 2005 visit to Spinning On Air, which you can hear in the archive at the link above. Enjoy!

Hey please ask these guys to play "BIke Shop Boy" from their last record -- one of the best new "folk" songs I've ever heard. Please?
